York PA Overdentures
"Overdentures" is a term used to refer to a system of dentures and mini dental implants, used together to give you a more secure denture wearing experience.
Studies show that many people with full dentures are not happy with them. In fact, an estimated 75% of people with lower dentures are unhappy with them, and of the people with upper dentures, about half of them are not fully satisfied with the look, feel or function of their dentures.
Those aren't great odds. If you are in a position of needing full dentures–upper, lower or both–you may at this point be worrying about your options. If you can afford them, dental implants are the best possible solution to your missing teeth, but they may not work for some people, due to health or financial limitations. If you can't go with dental implants, overdentures may be a great solution that also offers some of the benefits of dental implants.
Overdentures Placement
First, Dr. Currie will place mini dental implants in your jaw. These mini implants take a lot less time to heal than the root forms for dental implants.
As the mini implants heal, they integrate with the bone of your jaw(s) to provide stable "anchors" for the specially constructed overdentures. The ball-like top of the mini implants snaps into sockets on the underside of the overdentures. Typically, two implants are sufficient to provide stability for a lower overdenture.
Because the bone of the upper jaw is thinner, more mini implants may be required to securely anchor the overdenture. Each case is unique, and Dr. Currie will thoroughly discuss what will work best for your individual situation. An upper overdenture may require four to six mini implants.
An added benefit to implant supported overdentures is that the mini implants work like the root forms of dental implants, or the roots of your natural teeth, to keep the bones of your jaws healthy and intact.
