How do I fix black triangles?

I went to see a dentist that told me he was a cosmetic dentist. He was supposed to help me fix two small ‘black triangles’ that were on the teeth located right next to my front teeth. I noticed them after I went through my Invisalign treatment. The work ended up looking terrible. I complained and went back in to have him fix it, and it doesn’t look any better.

It doesn’t sound like he is much of a cosmetic dentist after all. The work looks ridiculous. Basically, I have some whitish material smashed between my teeth. It didn’t solve the problem with black triangles.

I left so upset and he said I just need to give it some time to get used to it. And if I’m still not happy at that time, he is willing to refund me. I guess that’s a good thing. But, now what? I can’t even get dental floss between my teeth because of the botched dental bonding job.

He said he was willing to have me come back in one more time for him to fix it. But at this point, I don’t even want him to try anymore. I am so unimpressed and feel foolish. Do I have any other options? It’s obvious this guy isn’t a true cosmetic dentist. I would be happier if I had my old black triangles back instead of this mess.

Here is an example of black triangles.

Black triangles are not easy to treat. They are usually caused be receding gums.

As you have discovered, not any dentist can do beautiful cosmetic dentistry, even if they say they can. It requires extensive training and experience beyond dental school. In fact, less than two percent of dentists fall into the category of an excellent cosmetic dentist. I’m sorry you have having to learn the hard way on this.

It sounds like your black triangles became visible after you got Invisalign braces. I can make some assumptions about what your options are. However, it is difficult to give you specific recommendations without having seen you in person or having seen photographs of your case.

The bonding doesn’t sound like it was done correctly. So at this point, you could simply have the composite dental bonding removed and return to how your teeth looked before. Or you could have the dental bonding redone to fill the space. But, you are correct in that you should not have the same dentist do the work. It’s time to find an experienced, excellent cosmetic dentist in your area.

As I mentioned before, filling black triangles can be tricky.

The shape can negatively affect your oral health. Adding in more bonding material may complicate things because it can create a food trap for particles to become lodged which causes plaque to build up. Then, calculus can build up too which will likely put you at risk for gum disease.

So if you go this route with the composite material being redone, it needs to be done by a cosmetic dentist that is experienced in treating black triangles. It needs to be expertly placed, polished and then tested to ensure that floss will be able to move comfortably between the teeth. If floss can be inserted and it reaches the gum tissue, and then it pulls out smoothly, then that means the shape is sufficient.

Another thing that you need to be on the lookout for is that this area is difficult to apply dental bonding too anyway. The gum tissue naturally has fluid in it. So when the bonding is placed that close to the gums, it can be compromised by the fluid in the gums. There are techniques where the gums can be retracted to minimize this issue so the composite material doesn’t stick to the gums. The process is quite tricky and again, needs to be done by an expert cosmetic dentist that is highly skilled in using this technique.

Another thing you of course will care about is how the final product looks. A reputable cosmetic dentist is like an artist. They will truly understand the color and opacity and how to manipulate it to look natural, in such a difficult area. And they want you to absolutely love your new smile. They won’t settle for anything less than that.

It sounds like your dentist is admitting he is in over his head by offering you a refund on the work. It may be wise to have him remove the bonding material, ask for the refund, and then move on. There are tools that can be used to remove and polish off the bonding so you can floss normally until you are able to get this fixed.

When you start your search for the best cosmetic dentist for black triangles, be sure to do some careful research this time around. Spend some time researching the dentist’s credentials, ask what kind of training and experience they have, review photographs of cases that are similar to yours and learn more about testimonials from other patients.

Is bad breath from Invisalign common?

I was so excited when my husband got Invisalign. He had been holding off forever and finally decided to move forward with the invisible braces system to straighten his wonky smile. But, now there’s another problem. His breath stinks!

It is so bad that I can smell him from across the room and I’m not exaggerating! I don’t want know how to bring it up with him. But he won’t be getting kisses from me anytime soon. Haha!

I keep giving him gum, but he’s not supposed to have it with the Invisalign trays. What do I do? I know I need to tell him about it and I was wondering if there is something that may be causing it. That way we can talk about what needs to be done to fix it. Is he having some kind of bad reaction? Or is there something wrong with his aligners?

You are smart to try and gather as much information as possible before breaking it to your husband. However, if you can notice the smell, you likely aren’t the only one.

For starters, let’s make sure he is following these simple tips.

Remove Invisalign aligners before eating or drinking.
Brush your teeth before putting them back in place. Floss at least twice daily and before replacing aligners if possible.
Use a tongue scraper once or twice daily.
Drink a lot of water.
Clean the aligners daily with a soft bristled toothbrush. Use gentle (non-abrasive) toothpaste, baking soda or a specially formulated Invisalign cleaner.
Keep up with regularly scheduled dental cleanings and exams throughout Invisalign treatment.

It may be good to chat with your husband about his oral hygiene routine and what he’s doing to take care of them. If he isn’t doing one of these steps, you can encourage him to be more diligent and explain why in a gentle manner. If he ignores you, then you may have to be more blunt and tell him his breath stinks. In the long run, it is probably better that this come from you than someone else. Maybe he isn’t aware that his breath stinks. He may be embarrassed at first. But, hopefully this helps him feel motivated to keep up with caring for them.

Now, if he is doing all of these recommendations and still is dealing with an odor, then there may be something else going on. It would be in his best interest to schedule another dental appointment to make sure there’s nothing else causing the odor. It could be an issue like a cavity or problem with his gums, his diet or some other health condition causing the bad breath. The dentist will be able to better assess exactly what is going on.

Is Invisalign better than braces?

I have always wanted to get my teeth straightened and my family didn’t have the money for it when I was growing up. Now that I’m an adult, I don’t want to wear metal brace. They are ugly and there has to be better options available now. What is the fastest treatment option for an adult?

Thank you for your question. You are correct. There are several treatment options you may be interested in to get your teeth straightened. Here are the pros and cons of each one.

Traditional Metal Braces

It sounds like you are familiar with metal braces, which have been around sine you were a child. This option does have some drawbacks. Obviously not everyone loves the way the look and the wires can be very uncomfortable. Keeping your teeth clean is challenging too. Also, you must go in regularly to have the wires and brackets adjusted.

However, metal orthodontics have been around for a long time and work well to straighten teeth. They are also more affordable than some of the other teeth straightening options available today. Each patient’s case is different regarding how long you would wear them to get your teeth straightened. Treatments can last for a couple years or more depending on the severity of your misaligned teeth.

Invisalign Invisible Braces

Invisalign is very popular right now. It has an extremely high patient satisfaction rating and will work well for most orthodontic cases. They look nice and from a conversational distance, no one will be able to tell you are wearing them. There are no uncomfortable wires or adjustments required.

Professional supervision is required throughout the process. Invisalign uses highly sophisticated computer technology to calculate the movements required to straighten your teeth. Several sets of clear plastic aligners are made and every two weeks, you start a new set. Gradually, you teeth are moved into the correct position. It is also much faster than traditional metal braces and Invisalign treatment averages a year, which is half the time as traditional braces. The aligners can also be removed for eating and brushing your teeth.

Invisalign is more expensive than traditional braces. Also, not everyone is a candidate. So, it all depends on the specifics of your case. Also, you must be diligent about wearing the aligners. So, if you don’t keep up with it, you won’t have the most timely results.

Porcelain Veneers

There is another option that delivers results in as little as two weeks. Cosmetic dentistry can be used as an option to correct minor spacing issues. Porcelain veneers are applied to the front of teeth to give the appearance of straight teeth. Not everyone will be a candidate for this option, since it only works for minor issues. Also, it does not correct the alignment issues. However, it does improve the aesthetics of your smile. Porcelain veneers can also fix the appearance of your teeth by making them whiter.

Do I need a new dentist to finish Invisalign?

I had to move and haven’t completed my Invisalign treatment. I have the aligners I need and am wondering if I really need to find a new dentist to monitor the last couple sets?

Every Invisalign case is different. The need for the supervision of a dentist is wide ranging. For example, a dentist may need to shave down the sides of teeth to accommodate the shifting of the teeth or “buttons” may need to be bonded to the teeth to help the aligners function correctly. If the aligners over-correct or shift them incorrectly, the dentist needs to intervene. However, in some cases there is not much that needs to be done by the dentist.

If you were just starting out with your Invisalign treatment plan, then the answer would be yes. But, since you are at the end of your treatment plan, it is possible that you don’t need supervision to complete it. If you wanted to find a dentist to finish things out just to be sure, the fees wouldn’t be bad. It would be wise to call around and ask about the fees at nearby dentists. Your records could be sent to the new dentist and any notes about your case could also be shared.

Ultimately, you could probably get by without it. But, since you have made it this far and made the time and financial commitment, you don’t want things to go wrong at the end.

It is also important to realize that after most orthodontic treatments, a retainer is recommended. This helps to ensure that the teeth don’t regress and make sure they are stable in their new positions.

The good news is that with Invisalign, the aligners usually serve as the retainer. For most, it simply means wearing them all the time for one full month. Then, you can start wearing them less and less. Try wearing them while you sleep for the following month or two. Then, you can move to every other night. If you feel like the aligners are really tight or it is hard to get them in after skipping a night, it means the teeth have shifted. If that happens, go back to wearing them every night again.

But, if the aligners feel fine then you can continue wearing them less at night. After several months with no movement, you can back down to once a week and eventually not wearing them at all. However, it’s always good to keep that last set of aligners so you can continually check on them.

You don’t want to be the patient that does nothing once the treatment phase is complete and has to start the whole process over again.

What causes pain with Invisalign?

I’ve heard so many great things about Invisalign invisible braces. The only negative thing I’ve heard is that it can be painful. Is that true?

You are correct, Invisalign has one of the highest patient satisfaction ratings of any type of dentistry procedure. Generally speaking, patients love them. Not only are they invisible, no one at a conversational distance will be able to tell you’re wearing them. They also work in about half the time as traditional braces. When compared to traditional metal and wire braces, they are much more comfortable too.

It may be a stretch to say that Invisalign is painful. However, you should expect some discomfort and aches when you put on a new set of aligners. The reason being, your teeth are slowly being re-positioned into the proper alignment. The pain usually subsides after a few days. Then, you can expect that same feeling when you change out your aligners in a couple weeks. This is because the new aligners are tighter and precisely designed to gradually move your teeth.

Here is what is going on. The ligaments, which hold each tooth in place are stretching. Think of them like rubber bands. They will resist at first. Then, your teeth will begin to shift. After that initial shift, the pain should subside.

Sometimes, the aligners may also be rubbing on your gum tissues, which may take some getting used to. But, think of it like building up a callous. You probably won’t notice that after the first set of aligners are complete. If the aligners are irritating you after the first set, it may be a rough or pointed spot on the aligner itself. In that case, give the dentist a call. The aligner can be adjusted. However, the chances of that occurring are pretty low since they fabricated by computers using highly sophisticated technology.

How to Deal With Pain from Invisalign

One recommendation we like to give if you are experiencing pain is when it’s time to change to a new set of aligners, do it at night. This way you will likely be asleep for that first transitional time.

If would also be a good idea to avoid any foods that are too crunchy or sticky for the first couple of days after a new set. This is because those ligaments are being stretched. So, you don’t want to put any added pressure on your teeth. So stick to soft foods for the first couple days.

Ice packs will also help any inflammation or discomfort, coupled with ibuprofen.

Most patients get used to the adjustment period and end up not requiring any kind of intervention. But, if the pain is too intense, don’t hesitate to contact your dentist. They can make sure everything checks out and there is nothing out of the ordinary with the aligners.

Will I need braces or will my gap close by itself?

I’m a teenager and have an ugly gap in my front teeth. I am wondering if it will close naturally or if I’ll need braces? I hate the way my smile looks. But, I don’t want braces either.

My wisdom teeth aren’t in yet either. Is it true that they can push the other teeth to close the gap?

Thank you for your question. The gap you are referring to is called a diastema. In some cases, the eruption of wisdom teeth will close the space. This is possible if the gap is small. However, even if the wisdom teeth do help to close the gap, there is a piece of tissue called the frenum which is located between your two front teeth. Sometimes, this interferes with the proper closing of the front tooth gap.

Often, the space you have in the front teeth can be caused by the frenum. So, if the gap is small, it may work. But, generally speaking there isn’t enough room in the mouth for wisdom teeth to correctly reposition your teeth. Therefore, most individuals end up having their wisdom teeth removed.

If the gap is too large after the eruption of your wisdom teeth, then patients will have the frenum removed. Then, orthodontics is usually the next step to close the gap.

If your teeth are pretty straight, you may be interested in Invisalign to close the gap. This treatment is very popular with patients because it works in half the time as traditional metal braces and is much more comfortable. The Invisalign aligners are removable, which means you can take them out while you are eating. And the best part is that they are clear.

Another possibility to give the appearance of closing the diastema is with porcelain veneers at a cosmetic dentist. These thin shells of porcelain are adhered to the surface of your teeth and make it look like the gap is closed. But, porcelain veneers don’t reposition the teeth.

The best thing to do for someone your age is to consult with your regular dentist first to figure out the status of your wisdom teeth. Everyone loves Invisalign, but I’m not.

I got Invisalign and I was surprised by several things. First off, I don’t love it! All anyone would say at first was that there are so many benefits over braces. No one will be able to tell you have it. The list goes on. Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m excited for the results. But, I think people need to know, my breath stinks, I have a terrible taste almost all the time and I feel like I’m drooling everywhere. Also, at first it kind of hurts. Any advice to help a new Invisalign patient not get discouraged?

Thank you for your honesty. It is important to set expectations beyond the marketing material. Even though you may not be experiencing all the benefits of Invisalign right away, they have one of the highest patient satisfaction ratings in dentistry.

However, let’s take a closer look at some of the not so lovely things you’ve addressed about your experience as a new Invisalign user.

Discomfort with Invisalign Aligners – Half of Invisalign patients describe discomfort when receiving a new set of Invisalign aligners. It usually peaks about a day into wearing the new set of aligners. Then, it should decrease quickly. Studies indicate that it is much more comfortable than traditional teeth straightening methods, like metal braces. And a third of patients say they wouldn’t categorize this uncomfortable period as pain. It’s more an annoyance and uncomfortable time. Then, usually by day four, is subsides almost completely. This is completely normal. It is exactly how Invisalign was designed to work. The pressure placed by the aligners is causing the teeth to gradually shift into their correct positions. Some anti-inflammatory medication for those first couple days, should help you significantly.
Yucky Taste in Mouth – So, there’s no way to sugar coat this complaint. When there are tiny food particles and bacteria that are left on your teeth, bad breath is the result. The aligners have a tendency to lock in the bad taste if the teeth are not brushed after each meal. You will also be at an increased risk of tooth decay. So, try to get in the habit of brushing your teeth every time you put your aligners back on. If that’s not possible, try to rinse your mouth with water as best you can before putting them back in. This should improve if you are diligent about brushing.
Increased Salivation – This is another common occurrence of first-time Invisalign users. Here’s what’s happening. Your body is recognizing a foreign object and is actually trying to digest it. I know it sounds funny, but the “drooling” or increased saliva will go away pretty quickly. Practice speaking in front of a mirror and resist the urge to remove them when you start salivating. If you keep taking them out, this phase will last longer.

4. Significant Other Problems – You didn’t mention this one. But, many patients report that they have relationship drama at first. You may feel self conscious at first that they look funny or feel different. But, the fact of the matter is if you are comfortable, so will your sweetie. Just keep up with the brushing and try to act normal. Just think how things would be if you had those metal brackets and braces.

Stay focused on the end goal with Invisalign. Your teeth will be straightened in about half the time as conventional orthodontics. They are clear, so most people won’t even notice them.

Why does my boyfriend’s breath stink after Invisalign?

My boyfriend got Invisalign a few months ago and now he has terrible breath. I didn’t want to say anything at first. But, it’s all I think about when I’m around him. Other people have to notice it too. And I don’t want to get close to him, let alone think of kissing him. There have been times where I’ve smelled his breath across the room.

I’ve tried being subtle by offering him gum and mints. But, he knows he’s not supposed to have it with the aligners. Is this normal? Or is there something wrong with them?

Here are some helpful tips.

How to Keep Invisalign Trays Clean

Always remove the aligners before eating.
Brush your teeth before putting them back in your mouth.
Floss at least twice a day. It would be great to floss after each meal too.
If needed, use a tongue scraper daily.
Drink a lot of water to stay hydrated.
Use a soft toothbrush to clean the aligners.
Stick with regular cleaning and exams at the dentist.

If he is missing some or most of these things each day, it’s time to have a chat with him. Try to do so in a way that isn’t going to embarrass him. Try to focus on the fact that it is the Invisalign that is making his breath bad. Hopefully, he will listen and won’t take it too personally. Then, focus on the things he can do to improve his daily regimen.

Now, if he is doing all of these things, then there is probably a more serious issue. He may gum disease or cavities. Or it is possible his diet could be a contributing factor. Whatever the case, it’s time to see the dentist.

What is the best way to keep my Invisalign aligners clean?

I’m considering Invisalign because I have heard so many great things about it. I’m self-admittedly a fanatic about germs. Do you have any tips about keeping them clean and sanitized?

As you’ve probably seen, Invisalign has one of the highest satisfaction ratings by patients. This clear alternative to traditional braces straightens teeth in about half the time, is comfortable and no one knows you are wearing them from a conversational distance. However, the aligners may get stained with regular use.

Here are some helpful tips for keeping Invisalign aligners looking great.

Stay away from toothpaste – It is not good to use toothpaste on your Invisalign aligners. Teeth cleaning products can be abrasive and can scratch your aligners. Also, mouthwash will end up staining them too. So ask your dentist about what products he or she recommends or find one that has proven to be safe for Invisalign aligners.
Remove them while eating – One of the major benefits of Invisalign invisible braces is that they are removable. So, be sure to take them out when you eat. Food and drink can stain the aligners.
Baking soda – Try baking soda to help clean them and remove stains. It is not as abrasive as toothpaste. Use a small amount of baking soda combined with warm (not hot) water and brush mixture over aligners with a soft toothbrush.
Good oral hygiene – Keep up with regular brushing and flossing to help keep your teeth clean. This will help avoid any bacteria or food debris from getting back on your aligners. Also, be sure to remove the aligners when brushing teeth too.
Soak the aligners – If you don’t have access to Invisalign-approved cleaners, you can make your own. Use half hydrogen peroxide and warm water to help with stains. Or you can try half white vinegar and water and soak for 10-20 minutes. Don’t leave them longer than that because vinegar can be harsh from the acid in it.

Are these Invisalign myths true?

I have been thinking about getting Invisalign and came across this article that had all these negative feedback. However, after digging deeper, I think it may have been to promote another similar treatment. How much truth is there to these statements?

Seniors shouldn’t get Invisalign
Traditional braces take a similar amount of time
Braces are more effective
I can get them cheaper online, without a dentist
I can’t eat the foods I love
I’ll be prone to cavities

Well, this is an interesting inquiry. Invisalign has one of the highest rated patient approval ratings in dentistry. It is known to straighten teeth in about half as much time as traditional orthodontics. Also, they are much more comfortable and from a conversational distance, no one will know you are wearing them. So, it’s not surprising that there are some misleading claims out there trying to discourage patients from choosing Invisalign, in order to try a different product.

Here is the breakdown for each claim.

Age – The Invisalign treatment was created for adults and then the company eventually came out with a teen version. There is no age limit to Invisalign. Older adults will have similar results as others, when used correctly and under the supervision of a dentist.
Timeframe – Invisalign invisible braces generally straighten teeth in about half as much time as traditional braces. However, this involves strict patient participation. So, if a patient doesn’t wear them as instructed, that would slow down the treatment time. The clear aligners are created using sophisticated, computer-generated technology which calculates the gradual repositioning of your teeth. Every two weeks a new set of trays is used.
Results – Traditional braces may still be the best for severe crowding or misalignment. However, if your dentist confirms that you are indeed an Invisalign candidate, you should expect successful results.
Online – Orthodontics is a specialty area within dentistry. It takes a high level of skill and you cannot order traditional braces online. The same holds true for Invisalign. This treatment plan requires supervision while using it. A dentist will need to perform an examination to make sure you’re a candidate. Also, they will determine if you have any urgent needs prior to starting Invisalign. You may save a bunch of money when ordering a knock-off version online. However, you will be taking a risk with your results and may end up causing more damage in the long run. It is not recommended to order Invisalign or a similar product online without a dentist’s supervision.
Foods – There is no need for concern over missing the foods you enjoy. Simply pop out the clear aligners whenever you are ready to eat. However, with braces, you need to avoid hard, chewy and sticky foods.
Cavities – This may be a concern with Invisalign if you drink sugary beverages. The sugar may become lodged between your teeth and the aligners. This type of scenario lends itself to decay. However, you shouldn’t be drinking anything but water with the aligners in place. So it shouldn’t be a problem. Also, once your teeth are straight, flossing and regular oral hygiene will likely improve.
